  15. <p>Soft-sell televangelism hits the Soviet Union
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    Even in the unpredictable Soviet Union, television viewers
  18. must be astonished by a new program on one of the two state-run
  19. channels. Last week, in a Sunday time slot following the
  20. evening news, Metropolitan Pitirim, head of the publishing
  21. department of the Russian Orthodox Church, appeared on the
  22. screen garbed in clerical robes and holding prayer beads. For
  23. ten minutes, Pitirim spoke soothingly about the need to set
  24. aside daily troubles in order to help others and contemplate the
  25. meaning of life. The priest also worked in discreet mentions of
  26. Jesus Christ and the Bible.

  28. <p>    Metropolitan Pitirim was appearing on a new weekly show
  29. called Thoughts About the Eternal: Sunday Moral Sermon, which
  30. a layman had inaugurated the previous week. Pitirim's
  31. commentary, though as innocuous as a sermonette after an
  32. American late movie on television, was nonetheless historic: the
  33. first time in 72 years of Communist rule that a clergyman's
  34. sermon had been broadcast. Coming six weeks before President
  35. Mikhail Gorbachev's scheduled meeting with the Pope at the
  36. Vatican, the show underscored Soviet leaders' increasing
  37. tolerance of religious practice.
